More than 50 years ago, a cohort of musicians including trumpeter Lee Morgan and saxophonist Wayne Shorter went into the studio to record a five-track album that would introduce a new phrase into the jazz lexicon. With a title lifted from the 1948 Irwin Shaw novel, The Young Lions, they pushed forth the idea that a small group of talented, young artists could change jazz. Of course, many of the artists on The Young Lions album were already widely heralded in the music world, but the impact of their one-off creation altered the jazz zeitgeist and pointed the way for many other landmark recordings of the 1960s.

Other generations of "Young Lions" have since arrived and established new jazz directions and leaders, but the roar over crowning a post-Millennial group of driven, tenacious musicians seemed to have diminished. Until now.

With The Atlanta Young Lions, Hot Shoe Records continues a lineage that began in the post-bop era. The Atlanta jazz scene is home to a pack of five vibrant, enthusiastic musicians who have established themselves as some of the go-to professionals in the city, despite their relative youth. Enjoy their debut!
